About Manuela Woolsey

Manuela Woolsey Manuela Woolsey is a Missouri Artist who resides and works in Leslie Missouri. As early as she can remember Manuela had a desire to create. Her mother was from Germany and her father was a musician so this made for a creative childhood but her mother did not like the mess that came with it and would not allow her to have paint. She was frequently in trouble for drawing on steamed up windows. She spent most of her time with her sister that was one year older and they loved playing in the nearby creek and farm lands. After graduating High school in 1985 her parents encouraged her to obtain a more realistic career rather than pursing her dream of being an artist. They suggested drafting but Manuela struggled in math and language so her earlier years found her traveling as a photographer, make-up artist, stylist and sales manager. This gave her much needed experience in communications, marketing and the business world in general. After her son was born in 1993, she didn't want to travel and she realized her real dream was still to become an artist. She decided to go back to school where she was lucky enough to study under Chuck SHOEMaker "SHOE" and Larry Pogue (sculptor) and was in the last group of students to study with them at ECC. She obtained an associates in science (graphic arts) with a focus on fine art from Forest Park. Manuela spent the next 5 years as a prepress production artist at Magnet LLC. This experience brought her creativity together with the understanding of most print procedures, computer process and design and ironically typing/spelling. She also freelanced during this time and completed many projects including book covers, logos, T-shirts, adds, brochures, posters, web design, computer illustrations, murals & painting furniture, Trompe-l'œil projects for her clients. If you can dream it, she can create her motto. In 1998 she met the love of her life Jon Hanson. In1999 she bought a lakefront property nestled in a valley where she found water and landscapes to draw inspiration from. In 2003 Jon and Manuela were engaged and in 2005 they had their daughter. In 2009 she was afforded the opportunity to become a fine artist full time. Her biggest passion besides family is painting "Plein Air" Or Painting outdoors. Definition: "of or in the manner of various French 19th century schools of painting, esp impressionism, concerned with the observation of light & atmosphere effect outdoors". Manuela is also currently the vice-president at a local non for profit Art Works On Main in Gasconade County, Owensville Missouri. She served briefly for ACOW in Washington, MO. When she's not in her studio creating for clients or mentoring students, you can find her behind her easel capturing the moment on her canvas at Plein Air competitions or painting with friends. She has recently switched to oil and really enjoys the ease that it brings when working outdoors . Events Manuela regularly attends include Augusta Plein Air Festival, Paint the Town (Town & Country) Paint Webster St. Charles River Front Paint Out, Owensville Paint the Fair and Steelville Plein Air. Some of the workshops she's had the opportunity to attend are with Julie Wiegand (oil) Michelle Wells (pastel/mixed media/composition) Lorraine McFarland (pastel & value) and Nationally recognized artist Patric Saunders (oil), Farley Lewis (acrylic) & Shawn Cornel (oil). If you are in the area stop by the Art Works On Main Gallery and see her most recent works in person from Wed-Saturday.
